Excavators are grouped by operating weight. Bigger machines dig deeper and faster but need more room, a bigger trailer and a heavier tow vehicle.
| Class | Approx. weight | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Micro / mini | about 1–3.5 tons | Tight backyards, trenching for irrigation and cable, small footings |
| Mini (larger) | about 3.5–6 tons | Septic and utility trenches, stump removal, ponds, grading |
| Midi | about 6–10 tons | Larger utility work, basements, site prep |
| Standard | 10 tons and up | Deep foundations, mass excavation, demolition |
Weights and specs vary by manufacturer and model; check the spec sheet the yard gives you.
Questions That Decide the Size
- How deep? Compare the job's dig depth with the machine's maximum dig depth, leaving a margin.
- How wide is access? Measure gates and paths; the smallest minis pass through about 3 feet.
- What surface? Rubber tracks protect lawns and driveways.
- How will it get there? Delivery is easiest; towing yourself needs a rated trailer and vehicle.
