Forklift Certification Requirements

Updated November 5, 2026

Do You Need a Certification to Drive a Forklift?

In the U.S., OSHA requires employers to train and evaluate every forklift operator, and to re-evaluate at least every three years, before they operate a powered industrial truck at work. There is no single government "license": the employer certifies the operator after classroom training, hands-on practice and an evaluation. Many dealers and rental companies offer training.
